Subject: meeting thursday re Kurdish deportations
Date sent: Mon, 22 Aug 2005 22:47:42 +0100
Dear Stella and John
The govt is preparing to repatriate Iraqi Kurds en masse. They say they
are satisfied there is a safe route to northern iraq. UNHCR says things
are marginally better in the North but that it is still only safe for
carefully
monitored voluntary returns. They say there should be no forced
deportations. Amnesty and human Rights Watch have both come out
with statements saying nowhere in Iraq can be considered safe at
present. All these organisations recognise the long standing and covert
issues that would make repatriatrion dangerous.
There will be a meeting about the situation on Thursday Aug. 25th in
Sheffield, Verdon St ( off Spital Hill) at 7pm. There will be several
speakers. A demonstration will be arranged for Saturday afternoon in
the Peace Garden (2pm).
I hope you may be at home and able to let folk know about this. Thanks
and best wishesto you both. myra davis
