Hey there,
I'm sure you'll all be glad to see a fresh voice on the SSF, (not that the
un-fresh voices aren't worth listening to; I have been lingering around here
for some time since moving back to Sheffield, but I feel that I haven't
participated enough and I certainly will try and make it to a democracy cafe
sometime soon).
Exciting things are happening with Peace in the Park this year. Last year
there was much talk I believe of workshops taking place before the actual
event, but that never really materialized. I think it's going to be really
important to have these workshops in order to increase community awareness
about the festival. Our intention is for there to be workshops every week
from Feburary until the actual festival date, located in several different
community centres (this is ambitous, but it is best to start with the best
of intentions, yes?) The general theme running through the workshops is that
of water- in terms of what it is, what is can do (witness the terrible
boxing day events), and why we need it. There are already a couple of ideas
around, but we are dearly in need of some more. Visual arts, performance,
writing, audio, dance whatever...
It is my hope that the products of these workshops taking place in different
parts of Sheffield can be brought together and integrated into some final
performance or display at the actual festival (i.e. the sounds we have
created, the costumes we have made working to tell some story; maybe a
reflection on what has happened in South Asia). Keeping an eye on the local
and the global. Encouraging discussion and debate. This is what it is all
about for me.
What I need from SSF list folks is to see if anyone would be interested in
giving a hand with these workshops, or if anyone has any ideas on 'water'
themed workshops. They are still in a very nebulous stage at the moment. But
we do need to start action now I feel. I for one have really positive
feelings about what PitP can bring, and what the SSF can bring to it, and I
am really looking foward to the summer in general actually.
But yeah. As I was away from Sheffield for a few years I am not entirely
sure what community centres to approach so if anyone here could give me some
advice regarding places I could try then I would be very greatful. Oh, and
the next planning meeting is on Monday 17th, (more details are on the
website).
All the Best,
Benjamin.
