Just so everybody knows - Nether Edge Against War had a meeting yesterday afternoon at which we agreed to produce a G8 Nether Edge leaflet this evening. For distribution to every house in the district. Please leave any spare shoulder launched ground to air missile launchers in my outside toilet.

hello steve.. you might have worked out we can not give the location of the
conter confrance location as yet.. however haveing walked around the city
centre today it seems the exclushon zone will not reach devonshire green.. the
reson for devonshire green as a meeting point for one of the main actions ie
critacall mass.. is that it leads us to meny directions.. you know how critcall
mass works.. however this one is very diffront.. thats the one of the 15th at
430.. the aim is to add to the city being closed.. we aim to show how crass and
undemocratic this whole g8 circus thats comeing to our city is.. here is not the
place to have open chats about what why and so forth.. becasue there reading our
e mails do you not know.. thats why we have meetings every wed 730 at the
rutland here we plot talk in joyess conversation.. a nobel art being lost due
to e mail.. here we meet face to face share the awsome feelings of each
othere.. this e mail lark is good in some respects.. but there is nothing
better than face to face conversations.. so come along share your thoughts
ideas and of course fears.. be part of the joy that is sheffield against g8..
and oh it is an joy a very real plesure to be involved.. if you can not make
meeting e mail me or phone and lets do coffe etc.. the other critcall mass by
the way is on the 11th 830am devonshire green and please come join us for a
what is planed to be a very wonderfull joyess celbration of the nobel art of
bikes pogo sticks space hoppers walking running and so fourth see you there..

Dear anti g8 lot.
Hello.
Brief look at your website(wiki.sheffieldsocialforum) tells me that there
will be a "democratic" counter conference. Let the people decide, huh?
Therefore as a people let me ask/and or point out:
1. SCAAT might be interested in June 15th workshop. Needs more information
as to where and how.
2. Point out that centre is spelled centre and not center - which is MUCH
UNFAVOURED USA spelling.
3. Understand a choir will be singing in City Centre on evening of 15th
June. Will they then also attend the poverty banquet?along with other
musicians?
4. Should for some reason Devonshire Green be illegally closed or
inaccessible on 15th, point out that Ellesmere Green MIGHT WELL BE a super
alternative - multi-cultural and accessible.

Regards and best.
Smiley Steve.

Dear all,

I started writing a letter to the paper and it's turned into a bit of a rant, so I thought I'd try it out on you first - I'd appreciate your comments.

Apologies for cross-posting, and congratulations if you're on all these lists..!

Jenny

The G8 in Sheffield - why does it matter?

Many Sheffield people will now be aware that the G8 Interior and Justice Ministers are meeting in Sheffield on 15-17 June 2005 - but what is it all about?

It's not a democratic forum

The G8 is not the United Nations - it is an exclusive meeting of the seven biggest economies in the world, plus Russia. It's rather like the big boys ganging up in a corner of the school playground.

Their agenda

The G8's agenda has never been to solve the problems of hunger and health experienced by three-quarters of the world's population. They meet to make the world safe for globalisation - a process that puts capitalists in control of everything, right across the world.

How they work

Their states support globalisation through privatisation (e.g. of water supplies in Africa, as well as your bus services) and war (e.g. in Iraq, and the threats to Iran and Cuba). This adds to insecurity in the global South, and to migration, as the people just try to survive and prosper.

What will the Interior Ministers be talking about?

They see terrorism as the worst threat, and they have used this as an excuse to:

a.. lock up suspects without a trial
b.. increase the state's control by keeping information about everyone
c.. play on people's fear of outsiders, and people with different beliefs, appearance or cultures
They will be sharing ideas about combating terrorism and controlling the movements of the population.

What it means to Sheffield

Sheffield will see some of their ideas in action:

a.. residents will have to carry a passport to enter and leave their homes
b.. armed police will patrol the streets
c.. helicopters will hang overhead for days on end
d.. your email and phone calls may be intercepted
e.. you will be excluded from your city centre while the G8 wine and dine there
f.. pubs, theatres, clubs and restaurants will have to close, and buses and trams will stop running
Your local MP and city council are, in fact, so proud of your city that they are prepared to exclude all citizens from it in order to show it off.

If you would like to add your voice to the protest against this way of running the world, come to the city centre at 5.30 on Weds 15th June, and see www.dissent.sheffield.org.uk for more information.

Hia,

Excellent! Punchy, witty and accurate. Not too long, and not ranty at
all, to my eye. Also, it's cut out any blind 'G8 are evil corporate
whores wot want to eat our babies' language: the image of boys in the
playground's a lot more realistic, and a lot more derisory. Cool!
