Summer is right around the corner, and that means it is almost time for the
HAND Green Team's much-anticipated *Bull Run Watershed Tour*, scheduled for
*August 22, 2009*!
This event will be *educational and fun* and also a good way for neighbors
who are interested in sustainability ~ and HAND Green Team projects in
particular ~ to spend some time together in the great outdoors.
As part of the HAND Green Team, please check your calendars, and *sign up
soon*! Then tell friends, family, and neighbors who you think might want to
contribute positively to neighborhood sustainability to join us for
this *exclusive
guided sustainable watershed extravaganza*. You're getting first chance at
spots on the tour, as space is limited to 26.
Some things to know about the tour:
- Tours typically last 8 hours.
- The tour program is free, but participants must cover transportation
arrangements and costs ($10).
- Smoking is not allowed on tours.
- ADA compliant, accessible restrooms are available.
- In the interest of water system security, all tour participants will be
asked to provide identification information.
*To sign up for the tour, make out a **$10 check payable to HAND* and...
.*..bring it to the next HAND Board Meeting*, which will be on June 16th at
7PM at St. Philip Neri, Paulist Center (SE 16th and SE Clinton)

The Portland Water Bureau, in cooperation with the U. S. Forest Service,
offers a limited number of tours annually in the Bull Run Watershed. All
tours are planned and guided by a professional Water Resources Educator.
During the tour participants learn about Portland's primary drinking water
supply.

- *The watershed drains about 102 square miles of forested landscape. *
- *Over 250 species of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish may
occur in the watershed, according to an Oregon Department of Forestry review
of Oregon's forest habitats. *
- *Almost 53% of the watershed is classified as 'old growth' and has
never been logged.*
- *Rain, not snowmelt, provides 90-95% of the water in the watershed,
averaging 130 inches a year.*
