(Some) men call themselves pro-feminist in recognition that the feminist movement is, and in order to work has to be, led by women themselves; they avoid calling themselves feminists to show that they are not trying to come into the movement and take over.

Personally, I find the use of pro-feminist vs male feminist works as a handy litmus test.
