Hello,

I can't speak for the whole gigspace collective at this moment, but the line I think I've always tried to hold during my 'punk years' is that events are not for profit, or personal gain in the round, but I've taken a broader view on costs than those encountered at that moment in time at the gig, i.e. contribution to the total cost of a tour, not just our date on the tour, or contributions to ongoing costs of making our culture - equipment, etc. against the frequent losses that bands sustain and to keep our community going. I've tried to work with people who I feel will re-invest any small surplus back into our community to keep it alive and thriving. Any surplus made through running my record label was re-invested in supporting bands untill it was drained away by losses. But of course this is mostly theoretical, in reality gigs rarely meet the true costs of even the there and now.

But of course this is just a view from the anarcho-punk community.

That would depend on WHY they were selling the merchandise, not the fact
they are doing it.

the

I was under the impression that bands sold merchandise to facilitate their
tour.
That includes having to buy food to eat, fuel, other travel costs.

I have no problem with Steve using Matilda and selling his merchandise to
facilitate
his creativity, and if, within that, he wanted to donate money to Matilda,
then
that would be very generous of him.
