  that could help us integrate Ancient Knowledge
with a new Scientific Paradigm"

When Russian psychiatrist Olga Kharitidi journeyed into the Altai region of 
Siberia she had no idea of how fundamentally it would change her life.  But 
her encounter with one of the oldest shamanic traditions in the world 
transformed her from a Cartesian sceptic to a passionate advocate of the 
way of the shaman, a path she's been walking ever since.  This is an 
extract from her book, 'Entering The Circle'.

The word shaman was first used by Russian travellers in the 17th century, 
when they wrote their report on their journeys, and they used the word 
shaman as it was used by some Siberian tribes.

Shamans in Siberia are like social workers, they are very much the product 
of a tribal society.  Shamans not only possess some magical or spiritual 
qualities, they are working for the community.  This social foundation is 
very important, and 'shaman' describes this dual magical/social role.

What I experienced was a process of Initiation because I experienced a lot 
of physical stress and physical transformation at that time.  It was almost 
like a psychotic state, like the states some of my patients experience in 
their visions and hallucinations.  So it is in my memory, in my self, in my 
body, and I have been using it in my attempts to help other people.  I have 
since worked with emergency psychiatric patients, helping change this 
balance, this fine line between death and life.  I have also done a lot of 
work, not all positive, on myself and with people who were dead and who 
were still trying to cross this boundary, this fine line.

Time, as the shamans understand it, is very deeply connected with my whole 
belief and the way I live my life now after having experienced the Altai 
and central Asian traditions.

I believe that our concept of Time is changing in a way that could help us 
integrate ancient knowledge with a new scientific paradigm.  On the one 
hand we see that we have this ancient knowledge and yet, on the other, we 
have modern medicine and modern science  and they are quite 
separate.  These days people are trying to bring them together using 
alternative medicine, alternative therapies and so on.

I believe that Time can serve this integration.  Time is still not 
scientifically understood as a phenomenon, even though you can't conduct a 
single scientific experiment, and not a single scientific methodology can 
exist, outside of Time.

When I first came across the idea of different time spirals, I found that 
in Central Asia Time was related to their god Zurvan, an ancient person or 
entity who was even incorporated into Zoroastrian cosmology.  Zurvan is the 
god of Individuality, the god of Time and the god of Death, the god of 
Personification.  One of the ways he was depicted was as a human figure 
with two faces.  One face is our normal face and the other is in the place 
of our heart.  For me this is a very literal manifestation of the whole 
time process and our own individual evolution inside this process.

I believe that what we are doing in our lives is developing this 
personality, developing this self-system, but the meta-goal for our 
spiritual development is to come into the realisation of a different self, 
which I call the ontological self, and which is located in the place of our 
hearts.  All the traditions talk about this, whether it is Russian 
Orthodox, esoteric Christianity, the Iranian tradition or the Sufi 
tradition.  They all talk about this Internal Man, this Celestial Being 
that lives in our hearts and which is asleep in normal circumstances.

But we can develop ourselves in such a way that we come into integration 
with this entity.  This is the door to immortality, into managing our own 
Personal Time.  I have done a lot of work trying to relate these concepts 
of time to our neurophysiological functions.

I found that Time flow, this god of time in our personal existence, is 
being connected with the functional asymmetry of our hemispheres.  Our 
right hemisphere is connected with our Past and our left hemisphere is 
connected with our Future.

This asymmetry changes at different ages, different stages of our life, as 
has been strongly proved by clinical research.  If we know how to explore 
it using particular techniques, then we can start managing our Personal 
Time and really do time travel.

The Unwritten Unalterable Laws
Of God And Heaven

"Antigone" is the last play in Sophocles' Oedipus trilogy.

Antigone's brothers battle and kill each other at the gates of Thebes, both 
wishing to be its future ruler.  Creon, their uncle, buries Eteocles with 
full rites for his role in defending Thebes, but leaves Polynices, the 
other brother, unburied, the prey of scavenger birds.

Antigone, who loves both brothers despite their enmity, takes it upon 
herself to cover Polynices' body with earth, honouring his memory.  In so 
doing she has defied an order imposed by the state and is confronted by 
Creon.  Her response, made even though she faces imprisonment, still rings 
across the centuries:

Antigone: That order did not come from God.  Justice, that dwells with the 
gods below, knows no such law.  I did not think your edicts strong enough 
to overrule the unwritten unalterable laws of God and Heaven, you being 
only a man.   They are not of yesterday or to-day, but everlasting, though 
where they came from, none of us can tell.
