Dear all,

I agree with Richard. This is exactly what I thought. Joss (I think) has drawn up a helpful way to calculate membership contributions
(http://socialsciencecentre.org.uk/documents/). A philanthropic gesture is hugely commendable and appreciated, but it's outside the
autonomous spirit of the project and has lots of implications. I would draw particular attention to Richard's suggestion that part of this
is about imagining and trying to practice different forms of economic activity, as the ones we've got often shape what we can do
educationally (and shape us and our relationships) in particular ways. I don't know Allan but have seen messages from him in support of e.g.
students occupying to resist tuition fee rises in Edinburgh in 2010, so I hope he'll be interested in these questions and perhaps getting
involved in a cooperative way.

I'll be in Kazakhstan on June 15th, but look forward to discussing on May 19th.

Best,
Sarah

I missed the earlier email round about this. We should definitely discuss it, but I have alarm bells going off about "financial support".

If our governance is co-operative, and we have a clear structure within which that is applied then why doesn't he join as a co-operator
donating an hour of a month's time/money/whatever? I am concerned that we do not get overtaken by the rule of money. If we are looking to
develop a different or alternative model for HE that may involve different forms of economic activity then I do not wish, within months, to
be reproducing what we already have in HE (benefactors, philanthropy, alumni offices etc.).

In solidarity,

Richard.
